To modernize the dental‑orthopedic order management for streamlining intake of prescriptions and improving coordination of manufacturing and fulfillment of dentists’ orders, the customer set out to develop a scalable system instead of several out-of-the-box systems that they were using. Itransition built a custom platform that centralizes intake and aligns production and delivery processes, making those workflows more efficient, advanced, and reliable.
The customer is a US-based specialized dental laboratory that produces custom orthodontic appliances and retainers for clinical practices. It offers end‑to‑end production services including additive manufacturing, fabrication, and streamlined order handling to shorten turnaround times. The business emphasizes solutions that reduce chair time and simplify clinical workflows through digital tools and practice-focused support.

For accepting new dental orthopedic prescriptions from clinics and managing their manufacturing and fulfillment, our customer was using several out-of-the-box solutions for dental lab management and order management. The company’s management was looking to implement a modern manufacturing approach and update the lab’s production processes to align with current industry practices and innovations.
With their current systems they were facing several challenges:
Itransition delivered a web-based system using Python Django and React for prescriptions intake and their manufacturing and fulfillment coordination. We also built a Kotlin mobile app that provides technicians visibility into work orders, production status, and priority tasks.
We delivered a web‑based solution to replace the customer’s current out-of-the-box solutions and a mobile application for Android for internal users to track the production process.
The web-based system supports the following key business flows:
Requests intake and validation
with web forms for entering prescription details, uploading images and scans, and attaching lab prescriptions;
automatic checks to prevent incomplete orders
Triage and authorization
with centralized dashboards for lab staff to prioritize items, clarify requests, check required materials
and expected due dates, and approve work to proceed or place orders on hold
Specification and work order creation
when lab technicians review scans, make adjustments, and approve digital appliance designs to generate
work order
Scheduling and capacity balancing
setting lead times, estimate completion dates to meet priorities and deadlines, balancing bench capacity
Execution and tracking
barcode or QR scanning and status updates supports traceability through manufacturing stages and reduces
manual mistakes
Quality checks
that route nonconforming items into corrective workflows with documented actions
Packing and dispatch
with packing details, carrier handling, and sharing of tracking information with ordering clinics
Communication and visibility
with real-time status updates visible to both lab staff and clinics and threaded messages tied to each
