The challenge

Working with multiple charterers that operate thousands of voyages every year, the customer aimed to implement a solution that would allow for data collection on voyages and enable calculation of carbon emissions for each voyage segment. The goal was to enable charterers:

  • Track operational efficiency by comparing estimated and actual voyage data
  • Ensure ESG transparency and comply with Sea Cargo Charter reporting obligations
  • Avoid extra costs from carbon taxes and surcharges in regions where high emissions increase shipping expenses
  • Demonstrate leadership in sustainable shipping to meet stakeholder expectations and strengthen reputation in global supply chains

The solution

At a glance

Itransition implemented a multi-tenant Azure-hosted emissions tracking solution that streamlines and automates data collection and validation workflows for each voyage segment and enables real-time reporting on carbon footprint.

We used .NET and React to build an emissions tracking solution consisting of a central management portal with an interactive dashboard, a core data processing center with an integrated emissions data collection form, and a Power BI-based reporting module.

Audit & analysis

The emissions portal serves as the central hub for managing voyage data and tracking the status of data collection. Its key capabilities include:

Initial voyage data import

Uploading information for upcoming voyages provided by charterers with multiple input sources support, including manual upload of provided files (XLS, CSV) and automated imports via FTP or API, triggered on schedule or on demand

Voyage data visualization

Displaying upcoming voyage details in a structured way on the built-in dashboard with filtering and search options, including, charterer ID, vessel name, IMO number, load/discharge ports, etc. and current data collection status

Voyage-level actions

For each voyage entry in the dashboard, the customer’s employees are able to:

  • Trigger a data collection form via API integration with the data processing center for selected carriers
  • View submitted data collection forms to verify or analyze data
  • Send reminders or request additional details from ships when needed
  • Access related reports for performance and compliance analysis

Data processing center

The data processing center forms a core part of the solution, responsible for data collection and automation workflows.

Data collection form

The data processing center features an integrated HTML/JS-based emissions data collection form, designed to ensure accurate, compliant, and user-friendly data submission. Its key features include:

  • Support for multi-segment and multi-type voyages
  • Smart validation checks for anomalies (e.g., zero fuel consumption, unrealistic speeds or distances, etc.)
  • Guidance and recommendations for correct form completion
  • Streamlined versioning to adapt to regulatory changes
  • Customization for specific charterers
  • Offline handling with draft saving and later submission
Data collection automation workflows
Initial voyage data gathering & processing
  • Generating data collection forms
  • Retrieving initial voyage data (e.g. upcoming voyage lists, ship and charterer info, preliminary estimates, etc.) from the central database using IMO-based matching
  • Pre-populating the data collection form using the retrieved data to reduce the possibility of errors
Email processing
  • Generating emails with pre-filled forms and attached instructions
  • Tracking email delivery and status in real time via SendGrid integration with proactive troubleshooting by the customer’s employees directly from the central management portal
Submitted voyage data handling
  • Parsing submitted data collection forms
  • Processing the received data by the built-in data processing engine to adapt the data to the defined structure
  • Updating the central data storage with received voyage details for reporting and analytics purposes

Reporting & analytics

To deliver real-time insights, we integrated the emission tracking application with a Power BI-based reporting module. Based on the collected voyage data stored in the central database, Power BI performs calculations and renders interactive embeddable dashboards and reports, ensuring users have immediate access to actionable information that can be displayed directly within the solution UI.

Key features:

Real-time data visualization
within the solution UI with export options for internal and external reporting.

Comprehensive metrics
including, carbon emissions by owner, vessel type, and vessel name, actual carbon emissions vs. permitted carbon emissions, year-to-date emissions by month and year, voyage count, distance sailed, cargo quantity, and benchmarking and voyage performance reports.

Compliance
with Sea Cargo Charter standards through standardized reporting templates.
